Diagnostic hearing evaluations for adults

Untreated hearing loss in adults can lead to cognitive decline, according to the latest research. If you are struggling to hear in background noise or group conversations, have your hearing assessed. Hearing tests are conducted in a soundproof booth or with specialized equipment designed for soundproofing purposes. Our equipment is calibrated annually to medical industry standards, so that we can ensure accurate and trusted results.

Paediatric hearing evaluations

Early detection of hearing loss is of the utmost importance for speech and language development in children and academic success later in life. It is recommended that all children undergo a hearing test before they reach Grade 1. Paediatric hearing tests are often conducted by two audiologists, depending on the age and co-operation of the child. Tests are non-invasive and conducted in a child friendly environment.

Non-obligation hearing aid trials

Studies have shown that providing hearing aid trials routinely is crucial in the rehabilitation process. This enables one to consider financial resources and lifestyle requirements. We offer a free trial with a wide range of hearing aids from different manufacturers to determine the best possible solution for your hearing difficulties.

Hearing aid fittings

Hearing aid technology has advanced greatly over the past few years, from direct streaming to most smartphones, rechargeability options for in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing aids, to instant in-the-ear fittings, the options are now endless. Advancing technology means that there are a variety of styles, makes, models and types of hearing aids to choose from. Based on your hearing loss, lifestyle and financial means we fit the most suitable option.

Hearing protection

The best ways to protect your hearing are to avoid exposure to loud sounds, move away from the noise, or turn down the volume. When these options aren’t possible, hearing protectors can help. Hearing protectors are wearable devices that can lower the intensity of sound that enters your ears and reduce the likelihood of developing a hearing loss.

Assistive listening devices

If hearing aids are not sufficient to hear in difficult listening situations, assistive listening devices will fill in the gap in both private and public settings. There are different options available for adults and children.

Doctor helping patient
Doctor talking to patient
Sleep, swim and snore plugs

These are custom-made floatable silicone earpieces preventing water from entering the ear canal or providing effective noise reduction when sleeping.

Tinnitus counselling and management

The experience and level of discomfort with tinnitus varies greatly between individuals, which is why it is important that a skilled and qualified audiologist performs a hearing test and Tinnitus assessment to correctly determine the best form of treatment and management.

Implantable devices - Bone Anchored Hearing aids (BAHA)

Bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) are surgically implanted devices that may partially restore hearing for people with certain types of hearing loss that are not ideally treated with hearing aids.

Newborn hearing screening

The newborn hearing screening test helps identify hearing loss from a moderate to profound level in all newborn babies, as early as two days after birth. This means parents and children can get the support and advice they need right from the start.

Occupational hearing testing

Audiometric testing helps determine if there are any early indications of noise-induced hearing loss. Because occupational hearing loss happens gradually over time, workers often fail to notice changes in their hearing ability until a significant hearing loss has developed.

Questions & Facts about hearing

Our ears grant us a truly unique way of experiencing the world around us. It can affect how we learn and communicate and even keep us on our toes.

Twelve million South Africans have some sort of hearing loss of whom less than 10% are receiving any treatment.

Hearing loss generally develops slowly over time and is often first picked up by family and friends.

People with hearing loss wait an average of 7 years before seeking help but the earlier you act, the better.

The longer you put off hearing aids, the harder it will be to get used to it.

Research shows that untreated hearing loss is associated with depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation.

In most cases, hearing can be significantly improved using hearing aids.

Common early hearing loss symptoms include:

High volume on the TV or radio.

Difficulty hearing the phone ring.

Difficulty hearing on the phone.

Struggling to follow conversation in noisy places such as restaurants.

Need to have phrases repeated.

Difficulty following conversation in groups.

Tinnitus or ringing in one or both ears.

If you are experiencing a sudden hearing loss, contact a medical professional immediately.

Online Hearing Screening

A hearing impairment can be caused by several factors and can include some of the following:

Excessive earwax.

Severe middle ear infections.

Ageing.

Constant exposure to loud noise.

Medical conditions such as diabetes.

Genetics.

The use of certain medications.

Hearing is categorized by severity and where the problem arises in the anatomy of the ear (outer, middle, and inner ear). Three categories are used to describe hearing loss:

Conductive hearing loss: sound cannot get through the outer or middle ear. This can be caused by fluid, infection or ear wax and can usually be treated with medicine or surgery.

Sensorineural hearing loss: Sensorineural hearing loss is a result from issues in the inner ear and is usually permanent. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent. It can be related to genetics and present from birth — though age, occupation, loud music, noise exposure and even medication are all common causes. It is generally permanent, and cannot be treated with medicine or surgery, though in most cases, hearing aids can help.

Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive, as well as sensorineural hearing loss and refers to a problem in the middle and inner ear.

If you are unsure whether you have a hearing loss, why not test your hearing for free online! You can do the test as many times as you like, and you will receive the result immediately after the test. All you need is your computer or smartphone and a pair of earphones or air pods.

Keep in mind that this is a screening test and cannot replace a comprehensive hearing assessment and does not constitute a medical diagnosis.

Should the online test indicate that you have a hearing loss, we would love to see you for an appointment and a comprehensive hearing test. This can be done in the comfort of your own home where we will do a comprehensive hearing test and take the time to discuss your hearing health and any questions or concerns.

Online Hearing Screening

The audiologist will explain your results and recommend suitable hearing aids for you based on your results and consider the shape of your ear, your lifestyle, and your budget. We work with a variety of hearing aid companies to ensure the best fit for your needs.

There are many hearing aids to choose from in different styles. We work with hearing aids from major companies such as Unitron, Phonak, Signia, Widex, Starkey

Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids fit behind the ear and the sound is delivered through a tube that sits in the ear on a soft dome of custom-made ear mould.

Receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids sit behind the ear with a thin wire connected to a receiver (the speaker of the hearing aid) that transmits sound directly to the ear. RIC hearing aids are the most popular style of hearing aid due to their comfort and discreet appearance.

Instant fit hearing aids devices sit discreetly in the ear canal but don’t require a custom impression of the ear shape. As instant fit devices don’t require a custom mould, they can be dispensed immediately on a silicone sleeve.

In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aids are custom made to fit the shape and size of your ear. An impression is taken of the shape of your ear and then sent to the manufacturer to have the hearing aid made.

Audiologists

Originally from the Karoo, I graduated at the University of Stellenbosch with a degree in Speech Therapy and Audiology in 2002 and completed community service in KwaZulu-Natal in 2003. Thereafter I worked in the UK for 7 years gaining experience as an adult and paediatric audiologist.

After moving to George in 2012, I worked for Cornel van den Berg as a Speech therapist and De Jager and Van Zyl Audiologists was established in 2013. I was fortunate to have experienced many different working environments and gained invaluable experience working with the new and evolving digital hearing aid market over the last 15 years.

I have a passion for language and communication, interests in early intervention in children and have great appreciation for the context of family and community. It makes me so excited to be living and working in South Africa again with a world-class team - striving to bridge sound barriers and being part of many hearing journeys here in the Garden Route.

When it came to choosing a profession, I found audiology to be a wonderful combination of science, physiology and psychology, which has always fascinated me.

I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Communication Pathology at the University of Pretoria in 1998. Wanting to further my knowledge in Psychology, I completed an Honours degree in Psychology in 1999 at the University of the Free State. I spend 7 years working in the UK, the last 5 years which were at St Thomas’ Hospital in London working mainly with cochlear implants.

In 2007 we returned to Cape Town and I started working at the Ear Institute in Belville. In 2013 we moved to George and Anel and I had the wonderful opportunity of utilising many years of local and international experience by starting our own practice in the Garden Route.

Eleven years down the line we are still as passionate and enthusiastic about delivering the best possible service to the Southern Cape community.

I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Communication Pathology at the University of Pretoria in 2013. I completed my community service year at Witrand hospital in Potchefstroom in 2014. In 2015 I had the opportunity to work at a busy private practice in the Krugersdorp Netcare Hospital, doing a wide range of behavioural and objective measures, hearing aids fittings, vestibular testing and implantable devices.

In 2017 we moved to the Southern Cape, where I started working for De Jager & Van Zyl Audiologists. It is an absolute blessing to be a part of the De Jager & Van Zyl team.
